Ghent Hotels
Ghent is a city of grey architecture that fails to compete with Bruges for pleasant surroundings. Ghent is primarily visited as a day trip expedition and is popular because it is steeped in history and character.
Ghent has a history of trouble and revolt, which reflects its atmosphere and appearance today. A great place to explore on foot, many buildings here date back to the twelfth century. Over the years, the city has faced turmoil and struggle of its towns folk, the Friday Market Square (Vrijdagmarkt) was the spot where trouble was religiously brought. Various periods in time are present in the canal street of Graslei. Here you will see the original 'House of the Grain Measures', 'the House of the Freemasons' and 'the Receiver of the Staple' all dating between the twelfth and seventeenth centuries and preserved in all their glory for us to see during our modern times.
In the centre of the city is the Korenmarkt with its generous narrow winding streets just a stone's throw from St Bavo's Cathedral and the Museum voor Schone and Gravensteen (Castle of the Counts).
28 miles from Bruges, few visitors tend to stay overnight in Ghent, if they do, they tend to head for the very good hotels in the centre of town.
